This adorable bag is the perfect accessory to your handmade wardrobe, and the ideal stash busting project too! Draft your own rounded rectangle tote bag to whatever dimensions you like, complete with gusset, gathered ruffles and sturdy handles. Our DIY ruffle bag is quick to make, the ultimate sewjo activator or palette cleanser between makes.

  • Fabric
  • What you need

Medium-heavy woven fabrics are ideal for a structured bag, but you could also interface lightweight fabrics to make them sturdier. Cotton canvas, oilcloth, soft leather, denim, sateen, jacquard, sturdy cottons and linens are all ideal.

  • Your fabric
  • Medium weight fusible interfacing to give structure to lighter fabrics
  • A length of ribbon to fasten your bag, OR a magnetic snap fastener (optional)
  • Appropriate machine needles for the fabric you're working with
  • Matching thread
  • Tape measure
  • Pattern paper - dot and cross or Swedish tracing paper
  • Patternmaster or French Curve
  • Your usual tools and sewing supplies
